Johan Vaaler of Norway invented the common paper clip. Born in Aurskog,Norway, Mr. Vaaler designed the paper clip in 1899. He got a patent in Germany on June 6, 1901 (DE 121067). He also got the US patent on June 4, 1901. He is not the first person who invented the paper clip ever more better products are there, but he was the one who got his design patent in abroad.  His Design was lacking in perfection because of the two full loops of the wire. His design was of a spring material, such as a piece of wire, that is bent to a rectangular, triangular, or otherwise shaped hoop, the end parts of which wire piece form members or tongues lying side by side in contrary directions.

Mr. Johan Vaaler

The modern paper clip was patented on November 9, 1899 to William D. Middlebrook of Waterbury, Connecticut. Middlebrook invented not just the paper clip but he also invented a machine to produce the paper clip. The drawings on the patent distinctly portray our modern day paper clip. The patent William Middlebrook obtained was for both the paper clip and its production machine.

What is a paper clip

A paper clip is an instrument used to fasten sheets of paper together, usually made of steel wire bent to a looped shape. Most paper clips are variations of the Gem type introduced in the 1890s or earlier, characterized by the almost two full loops made by the wire. Common to paper clips proper is their utilization of torsion and elasticity in the wire, and friction between wire and paper.
