When First International Cricket Test Match Played


It was 1:00 pm on March 15, 1877 when the first test begins between Australia and England. The 1877 Australia v England series was the first ever Test cricket tour of Australia by the English cricket team. The tour was from 15 March 1877 to 4 April 1877 in which the test series was drawn 1-1. Australia played under the captain Dave Gregory while England played under James Lillywhite. This series is not considered to be part of The Ashes. The first test won by Australia with 45 run win. The second test won by England with 4 wkts win.

The hero of first test was Charles Bannerman, who scored 67% of the runs in the innings, which remains a record today. His score is still the highest by an Australian on Test debut, and the ninth highest by all players. He was also first batsman who scored the first single in Test history off Alfred Shaw's second ball.

The match was played on Melbourne Cricket Ground.
